I owe this all to Reid. After Christmas he took a lot of time reading and learning up on gardening and decided that this summer in between school we would have a garden. Unfortunately, at our apartment complex there isn't any land for the tenants to take care of, but Reid found a community garden that is only like 5 minutes away from us. It took a while to find out if we got a plot, but finally at end of April we were assigned a plot! (The community garden is a first come first serve, so all the people who had plots last year could keep them, or if they didn't, new people got a chance at it.) So we got our seeds and tilled the ground. That was not fun, we had to do it by hand with just a shovel and being 30 weeks pregnant makes it really hard. Reid tilled it a second time and a nice lady that has a plot at the garden let Reid borrow her hand tiller. That went a lot quicker and that lady also gave us like 6 strawberry plants from her garden. (Everyone we have met at the garden is super nice!) Along with strawberries, we planted beans, peas, watermelon, cantaloupe, 2 different types of cucumbers and squash. We also started carrots and cherry tomatoes inside our house, the tomatoes are still growing, but after we transplanted the carrots outside, they died :(
Tomorrow we are going to one of the local farmers market and getting a tomato plant (something other than cherry) and on Friday we are doing some major weeding and mulching of the garden. It has been really fun being able to spend time together as a family to be outside and (try) grow our own food -even though it will be a while before we actually get to eat it :) I love Reid's enthusiasm and determination. Without it, we wouldn't be doing this. Thanks hun!
The little sprouts are the cherry tomatoes. The toilet paper rolls held the carrots that died
